SD-WAN
Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN) has the power to transform the way you work. An advanced WAN architecture developed to achieve optimal application performance. Discover how SD-WAN can improve your business.
How can SD-WAN improve your business?
What is SD-WAN?
Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) is an advanced architecture developed to simplify the branch office networking and achieve optimal application performance by leveraging a centrally controlled and managed wide-area-networking virtualisation.
Compared to conventional Wide Area Networks (WANs), SD-WAN delivers improved network agility and cost reduction. Software-Defined WAN originates from Software-Defined Networking (SDN), whose main function is to abstract the network hardware and transport respective characteristics from the applications that use the network.
What is the difference between SD-WAN & WAN?
Similar to server virtualisation which abstracts the root physical hardware from the logical virtual servers that run on it, WAN virtualisation is where a logical WAN connection (to either the Internet or between branch offices) can use multiple underlying connectivity technologies (like xDSL, MPLS, cellular and fibre) at the same time, but presents this connectivity to users and applications as a single direct-to-Internet or secure site-to-site connection.
Smarter WAN
SD-WAN is capable of monitoring area-network health and quality, then using those metrics to make intelligent decisions on traffic flow in an application.
The Benefits of SD-WAN:
- Real Time Streaming like VoIP and video data can be transported via the lowest latency link.
- Intelligent failover and active/non-active configurations can be used to guarantee reliability even when a WAN link fails.
- For additional agility, extra WAN Connections can be added if and when required.
There is no need for human intervention, as all traffic within the respective application is directed automatically by the pre-defined software rules set on the machine.

SD-WAN Frequently Asked Questions
How Do I know I need SD-WAN?
If you have a business with multiple office sites locally or abroad all tapping into a singular private network, then SD-WAN could definitely be of great benefit to you.
Is SD-WAN better than MPLS?
Aside from the superior security that SD-WAN offers, another main benefits of SD-WAN over MPLS is that it utilises broadband and 4G which is far less expensive than MPLS
What is the difference between WAN & VPN
A wide-area-network (WAN) is your Cable or DSL connection to the Internet, whereas a VPN is a secure tunnel between two respective networks that facilitates private traffic from applications to flow from one network to another. VPNs are delivered over a WAN or over a LAN.
What is the difference between WAN and SD-WAN?
Unlike traditional WANs, SD-WAN delivers increased network agility and cost reduction. Software-Defined WAN has its roots in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), the underlying principle of which is to abstract the network hardware and transport characteristics from the applications that use the network.

Is SD-Wan secure?
What are the benefits of SD-WAN?
- Real time services like VoIP and video can be sent via the lowest latency link.
- Intelligent failover and active/active configurations can be used to guarantee reliability even when a WAN link fails.
- WAN connectivity can be added as and when required to provide agility.
Best of all, once configured, all traffic is managed automatically by the software defined rules set on the device – no human interaction is required.
How does SD-WAN help network security?
The SD-WAN layer covers the security of the data as it travels across WAN links. Peplink’s patented SpeedFusion technology provides a significant advantage on this layer. Once the SpeedFusion tunnel is formed, sessions are broken down to packets and sent separately across available WAN-to-WAN connections. Because each connection is encrypted separately, potential hackers would need to obtain the key to every connection.
With Peplink, each secure WAN-to-WAN link is established through a Diffie-Hellman key exchange. The produces randomly changing data encryption keys to protect data with a 256-bit AES cryptographic algorithm. 256-bit AES would take the worlds fastest supercomputer millions of years to crack.
Is SD-Wan a VPN?
SD-WAN is Secure VPN
By using encrypted VPN, branch offices gain secure, local network access to cloud resources. SD-WAN makes these branch office VPN faster and more affordable by combining the bandwidth of multiple connections into a single logical WAN connection. In addition, SD-WAN provides the ability to offload public Internet traffic at the network edge, reducing traffic sent through the VPN.
Is SD-Wan the future?
Yes! If your organisation is not using SD-WAN yet then, why not? SD-WAN is not just for those global organisations, it can bring real benefits to any business or even home user. Benefits such as 100% uptime, enhanced security and bandwidth bonding are all features and benefits that are here and now.
Can SD-Wan reduce costs?
By using SD-WAN, costs can be reduced as you do not need to be tied to a specific connectivity provider. SD-WAN allows you to pick and choose various different types of connectivity ranging from ADSL, FTTC, FTTP, Cellular & Satellite. There is no longer a need to pay exorbitant MPLS prices.
